The biggest festivals in Germany 2026

Which German festivals are pulling the biggest crowds in 2026, what sets them apart, and when tickets typically sell out.

Germany has one of Europe's densest festival markets. Between June and September, several events with over 70,000 attendees each run in parallel — and the ticketing logic differs significantly between them. Here's the overview of the biggest, plus how to get tickets in time.

Which German festivals draw the largest crowds?

  • Wacken Open Air — about 85,000 attendees, early August, Wacken in Schleswig-Holstein. The world's largest metal festival. Sold out within hours for years running.
  • Parookaville — about 85,000, mid-July, Weeze on the Lower Rhine. Electronic music, multiple main stages, full camping-city concept.
  • Rock am Ring — about 90,000, early June, Nürburgring. Rock and alternative; Rock im Park in Nuremberg (~70,000) runs in parallel with the same lineup.
  • Lollapalooza Berlin — about 85,000 over two days, September, Olympic Stadium and Olympic Park. Indie, pop, urban, with a family-friendly "Kidzapalooza" area.
  • Hurricane & Southside — about 78,000 / 60,000, mid-June, Scheeßel and Neuhausen ob Eck. Sister festivals from the same organiser with nearly identical lineups.
  • Highfield — about 35,000, mid-August, Großpösna near Leipzig. Indie and rock; considered the most relaxed of the larger festivals in terms of organisation.

What sets them apart from each other?

Three axes are enough for a shortlist. Genre — Wacken (metal), Parookaville (electronic), Rock am Ring (rock), Lollapalooza (indie/pop). Format — all with camping except Lollapalooza, which runs as an urban day festival. Atmosphere — Wacken is its own subculture, Hurricane and Southside are the "classic" summer festivals, Parookaville stages itself as a theme park.

Sheer size is not the most important criterion. A 35,000-cap event like Highfield can be more enjoyable through layout — shorter walks, fewer queues — than a 90,000-cap one.

When do tickets typically sell out?

Cross-festival pattern: the first ticket block (blind buy, no lineup) is gone within 24 to 72 hours. Wacken regularly breaks records — under two hours in 2024. Lollapalooza day tickets sell out two to four weeks after the lineup drop. Hurricane and Southside take longer because the lineup is announced in stages and overall capacity is bigger.

The official resale function (Eventim Resale for most festivals) is the only legally safe source after regular sales close. Other secondary platforms work too but cost 30 to 100 percent more. Waitlist watchers should check again two to three weeks before the event — organisers release tickets from illness-related cancellations then.
